I bought a Western Digital 1TB hard externial?

This is a: Western Digital WD Elements USB 2.0 1 TB Desktop External Hard Drive WDBAAU0010HBK NESN, I would go back to my computer this is the best way to do it. From what I read there is no software with this drive, I must or I can do computer backups complete? I also have a laptop that does not use much or save anything, I partition the hard drive for backups as well. Is there software that I can use to help me as you see I have a lot of questions have not received it yet and I'm trying to get some knowledge before Tuesday 2
